WA Students Compete At State Science Fair

Five Westlake Academy eighth graders recently competed at the ExxonMobile Texas Science and Engineering Fair in San Antonio on March 22. The students were selected at regional science fairs after advancing from the Westlake Academy Science Fair held in January.

Keller residents Brynn Jones and Neena Perdue entered their project Got Germs” after placing third in the Microbiology division at the Dallas Regional Science Fair at Fair Park in February. Both girls were honored at an Awards Banquet held at Southern Methodist University on March 19.

Trophy Club resident Laurel Champagne and Joshua MacKaron, of Fort Worth, submitted "Green Clean: Effects of Oil Spill Cleaning Agents on Aquatic Plant Life” after a first place win in the Environmental Science division at the Fort Worth Regional Science Fair at the University of Texas at Arlington in February. The project also garnered an Honorable Mention - Division II Special Award-Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and an Honorable Mention - Division II Special Award - Best of Fair.

Hunter Cochran, of Colleyville, entered "Card Counting in Blackjack - Effective or Not” in the state competition after placing second in the Mathematical Science division at the Fort Worth Regional Science Fair. At the regional fair, Cochran’s project was nominated to compete in the Broadcom Masters for Outstanding Performance at a Society for Science & the Public - Affiliated Fair. As a finalist, Hunter will receive $500 and an all expense paid trip to compete in the Broadcom Masters finals in Washington, DC in October. Westlake Academy also won because of Hunter’s efforts! The school will receive $1,000 for having a finalist entered in the fair.
