John Wayne Film Festival Comes to Dallas for Second Year

For John Wayne fans, put your cowboy hats and boots on and get ready for the 2015 John Wayne Film Festival, coming to Dallas September 24-27 including screenings and auctions surrounding the movie star legend.

Going into its fourth year, the festival benefits the John Wayne Cancer Foundation and is returning to the Dallas area for the second year and featuring 15 of John Wayne’s most popular films, which are being screened at Highland Park Village Theatre and LOOK Cinemas.

“The film festival was started in Snyder, Texas, but was moved to Dallas by the 2014 Chairs, Anne & Steve Stodghill, who decided that they wanted to grow the festival and expose more people to both John Wayne films and the John Wayne Cancer Foundation,” said Catherine Brown, President, John Wayne Cancer.

Brown said that because of the love for John Wayne and his films, the Film Festival is a way for individuals, families and corporations to enjoy both John Wayne as an actor and to also learn more about him as a father and as a philanthropist.

“Before he died, John Wayne asked his family to use his name and legacy to help the doctors fight cancer,” Brown said. “Established in 1985, the foundation has been doing this through the establishment and support of the John Wayne Cancer Institute as well as other programs throughout the country.”

The 15 John Wayne films chosen to be screened at the festival were chosen, according to Brown, “in conjunction with the Dallas Film Society, our Event Co-Chairs and committee, and Ethan Wayne, Chairman, John Wayne Cancer Foundation” with everything from “True Grit,” to “The Cowboys” to “How the West was Won” available to be seen on the festival big screen.

Auction sponsor Heritage Auctions will manage the John Wayne Film Festival auction with items to bid on as diverse as an image of John Wayne in “The Searchers” from the John R. Hamilton Collection, a John Wayne .45 pistol and custom case by America Remembers, a John Wayne guitar and case by ASG and painting of Grace Kelly by Russell Young to name a few. The auction is live online at www.johnwayne.org until September 23, then transitioning to a live auction on the evening of the VIP Dinner, Friday, September 24.

Other activities during the festival will include an Art Walk at Highland Park Village with John Hamilton prints featured, and on Saturday evening, “The Searchers” will be shown at Klyde Warren Park.

With a hope to raise $300,000 at this year’s event Film Festival Co-Chairs Randall and Kara Goss said, “We believe that Dallas is the perfect city for the John Wayne Film Festival because of the deep philanthropic nature of our community and also because of its genuine love for John Wayne. As an honorary Texan, John Wayne always showed deep affection for our state and this affection has been carried forward by his family.

Tickets are $12 and can be bought at the Highland Park Village Theatre and LOOK Cinemas' box offices or by visiting johnwayne.org.

“Seeing the city and the communities of Dallas enjoy fabulous John Wayne films, while at the same time joining in on his final wish and legacy — to help in the fight against cancer — is a highlight,” concluded Brown. “Having Patrick Wayne, Melinda Wayne-Munoz, Marisa Wayne and Anita Swift, John Wayne’s children and oldest grandchild, present to introduce the films and answer questions about being on set with their father will also be key.”
